Bipolar Disorder Q&A

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which people shift between periods of feeling elated to periods where they feel very depressed. These sudden shifts in their mood make it difficult for them to manage daily activities and focus on the task at hand.

Researchers believe that bipolar disorder develops from certain factors like brain structure and genetics. Other factors that may trigger the condition also include experiencing stressful or traumatic events.

What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder?

The primary symptoms of bipolar disorder are mania and depression.

Mania causes feelings of excessive happiness. You feel unusually energized and elated like you’re on top of the world. You may also feel on edge or irritable and may have difficulty eating and sleeping.

Depression causes feelings of despair and intense sadness. You might feel low energy and motivation, and feel like it’s hard to concentrate on anything or make decisions.

People with bipolar disorder have mood episodes where they feel either manic or depressed every day.

What are the types of bipolar disorder?

There are three types of bipolar disorder. Each type causes distinct changes in mood and energy.

The severity and duration of these symptoms vary, depending on the type of bipolar disorder:

Bipolar I disorder

Bipolar I disorder causes people to have manic periods, which last for four days or more, or severe symptoms which may require hospitalization. Depression episodes follow these manic periods.

Bipolar II disorder

Bipolar II disorder causes shifts between depression and hypomania (a mild form of mania).

Cyclothymia, also known as cyclothymic disorder, causes fluctuations between periods of mild depression and hypomania that last for two years or more.
