Depression Q&A

What is depression?

Depression is a condition that leads to overwhelming sadness and loss of interest in everyday activities. It affects your mood and is often severe enough to interfere with your quality of daily life.

At State of Mind Wellness Center, the team understands how depression may impact your life, and offers compassionate care to help you through your difficult situation.

What causes depression?

It’s not always clear why people develop depression. Very often, there’s a chemical imbalance in the brain that affects mood, but why this should happen in some people isn’t fully understood.

There could be a genetic link as having relatives with depression increases your risk of having this condition as well.

Depression may also develop after a painful experience or a change in your circumstances, such as a relationship breakdown or losing a loved one. It could be the result of years of stress or chronic pain, or there may have been a trauma in your childhood that’s still affecting you.

There are specific forms of depression, such as postpartum depression following childbirth. Depression can also come on for no apparent reason.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression affects everyone differently, but some of the main signs and symptoms of depression include:

  • Feelings of hopelessness or despair
  • Low energy
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation or restlessness
  • Trouble making decisions or concentrating
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Chronic pain

Knowing the signs and symptoms of depression can help you to determine when to seek professional help.

How is depression treated?

Your State of Mind Wellness Center provider may use different treatment options to help you through depression, including talk therapy and medication. They can also provide referrals to other support groups or health specialists if needed.

To rebalance your brain chemistry and stabilize your mood, they may recommend antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), or selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

Talking therapies also play a significant role in recovering from depression. It can be tremendously beneficial to express how you feel in a safe environment, and your provider can also use techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you manage everyday life.

Most people respond well to a combination of medication therapy and counseling. Exercise, eating a healthy diet, and developing better sleep routines can also help with depression symptoms.
